The city’s origins are uncertain but it is generally accepted that it started out as a military encampment set up in 1070 by the Almoravid chieftain, Abu Bakr. His successor, Yusuf ibn Tashfin began the task of transforming what was just a simple oasis into a capital city worthy of his empire which stretched from the Atlantic Ocean to Algeria and from the Sahara desert to the river Ebro.
The Almohad conquest virtually razed to the ground the first constructions, but these were
replaced by others, many of which can still be admired today, such as the majestic Koutoubia tower, the inspiration for the famous Giralda in Seville, mosques and gardens and the famous Jamaâ El Fna square a UNESCO Universal Cultural Heritage site.
